Human Trafficking – Fact Sheet

  • Human trafficking is the recruitment, transportation, harbouring, or receipt of people for the purposes of slavery, forced labour (including bonded labour or debt bondage) and servitude.
  • 12 million people are trafficked for forced labour or sexual exploitation worldwide. (UN)
  • About 1,2 million children are trafficked every year. (UNICEF)
  • In Europe alone, an estimated 500.000 women and girls are being forced to prostitute each year. (International Organization for Migration)
  • Up to 100,000 of them come from Nigeria. (Ware Frau)
  • Profits from forced prostitution amount to 7 billion US-$ a year. (UN)
  • Every night over 15.000 sex clients are in search of sexual services form prostitutes. This does not indicate that all sex clients visit victims of trafficking, as there are other woman who prostitutes themselves freely.
